Baby massage – Anna Buonumo, Cuddles and music
“Touching is the first communication a baby receives, the first language of its development is through the skin” (Frederick Leboyer, author of Loving Hands).
The age old tradition of massaging babies has many advantages for both you and your baby. Babies communicate through their bodies. By using baby massage a parent grasps the art of listening, asking permission, communicating, interpreting and responding to cues. Both parent and baby benefit from eye contact, relaxation, bonding, synchrony, love and trust.
Loving touch is a powerful way to communicating and bonding with your baby, building confidence in your parenting skills and enhancing baby’s health and resilience. Gentle and loving touch can help small babies grow stronger and feel less anxiety. Infants who are touched display more eye contact, smiles and vocalizations.
Baby massage is simple, easy to learn and effective! It is a sequence of still touch, holds and rhythmic stroking by a parent on the body of their baby and it combines Swedish and Indian massage traditions, reflexology and yoga.
We know that babies can be unpredictable and they need feeding and cry at unplanned moments. We aim to create a relaxed atmosphere where these things are accepted and we go with the flow.
Baby massage helps muscle development, blood circulation, stimulates the senses and contributes to a regular sleep rhythm, good digestion and a sense of security. Baby massage is not a therapy, but it can provide relief from the typical gripes and grumbles a growing baby may experience, in particular wind and colic, constipation, teething and nasal congestion.
And it’s not just good for the baby! During massage, parents and babies experience a release of oxytocin, the body’s feel-good hormone, which creates a sense of well-being and relaxation. You may find that giving your baby a massage lifts your mood and helps you to feel more empowered as a parent. The time you set aside for a massage can be your special time together.
Baby massage is a wonderful bonding opportunity that benefits your child and you.
Both parents and older siblings can attend the course; they can choose to observe or to participate to the massage using a doll. Each session includes the massage of a specific part of the body and at every session there will be a review of the sequence learned the previous session.
